Dr. Raouf Hanna is a double Board Certified Specialist and one of the world's most sought-after dental implant specialists, serving as the founder of Hanna Dental Implant Center in Houston and an Emeritus Clinical Associate Professor of Periodontics at the University of Texas. With over 12,000 successful dental implant procedures and multiple revolutionary patents to his name, including the groundbreaking Full-On-5 implant procedure, Hanna has established himself as a pioneering force in dental implantology .
Hanna's journey began with an unexpected summer visit to Houston in 1996 as a second-year dental student. "I was actually studying dental school in Egypt in Cairo, and I was in my 2nd year. And then my uncle got transferred for his job in oil and gas, of course, to Houston," Hanna recalled. What started as a typical tourist visit turned into a life-changing opportunity when boredom led him to explore the local dental school. "I thought, you know, do they have a dental school? And I did some research, and I found that, wow, there is a medical center and there is a dental school."
His boldness in directly approaching department chairs, though met with initial rejection, eventually opened doors. "I got shut down by probably 6 or 7 of them, but there was a couple that were very receptive and saw some potential there." This early exposure to implant procedures and tissue regeneration sparked a fascination that would define his career path.
Among Hanna's most significant contributions to dental implantology is the Full-On-5 procedure, an innovation born from his desire to make full mouth restoration more accessible. "Before the full on 5, you needed 8 to 10 implants to get the full mouth implant," he explained. This breakthrough significantly reduced both the complexity and cost of the procedure, making it available to a broader population.
His commitment to innovation extends beyond single procedures. "Innovations in medicine or in general, whether you trademark or patent or think about a different step of a surgery or a different technique, clinically, all comes from thinking and not just performing the procedure," Hanna reflected. His various patents and innovations have consistently aimed at improving procedure success rates, affordability, and patient recovery.
Perhaps one of Hanna's most significant contributions to dental care has been his development of an all-in-one treatment approach. "Most of the time and still till nowadays, that model was happening that the patient would have to go to the surgery office, get the surgery, and then either the same day get transported to the other office to get their teeth done or go another day," he explained. Recognizing the inefficiency and discomfort this caused patients, Hanna created a comprehensive care model where everything from initial consultation to final restoration is handled under one roof.
This integrated approach has revolutionized patient care. "We do from the beginning and the planning all the way to even cleaning the teeth and maintaining them afterwards," he noted. The result is improved patient comfort, better team communication, and higher success rates.
Beyond his clinical innovations, Hanna has maintained a strong commitment to education as an Emeritus Clinical Associate Professor of Periodontics at the University of Texas. His teaching philosophy emphasizes understanding the fundamental principles behind procedures. "I always ask them or want them to know the why, not just the how. Because when they're on their own, they will need to know and make their own decisions during a life procedure."
When asked about his definition of success, Hanna reflected, "I feel that I am not satisfied or happy with where I am unless I feel I've done my best, and I've achieved almost my full potential." His advice to his younger self echoes this philosophy: "trust the process and trust that hard work pays and that small step at a time, small step at a time adds to big rewarding career and life."
Hanna's journey from Cairo to becoming a leading figure in dental implantology demonstrates how innovation, persistence, and a commitment to comprehensive patient care can transform an entire field. Through his roles as a practitioner, innovator, and educator, he continues to shape the future of dental implantology, making advanced dental care more accessible while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
The Six Degrees team sincerely thanks Dr. Raouf Hanna for sharing his inspiring journey and expertise. His dedication to advancing medical care, improving patient outcomes, and mentoring future generations of healthcare professionals is truly impactful. We look forward to seeing his continued contributions shape the future of medicine and make a lasting difference in the lives of many!
